The Process of Incorporating a Transplanted Heart: A Phenomenological Exploration.

The objective is to determine the prevalence and nature of psychic and philosophical disruption among patients listed for, and recipients of, a heart transplant.

We hypothesize that 1) psychic and philosophical disruption occurs commonly in heart transplant recipients; 2) psychic and philosophical disruption is associated with perceiving the transplanted heart as a disturbance to the self; and 3) psychic and philosophical disruption is associated with increased rates of graft rejection and decreased graft and patient survival rates.
